OCFS – Oracle Cloud File System

OCFS? That sure sounds familiar! OFS, OCFS? Where have a I heard that before? Oh yeah, Oracle Cluster File System! So, now Oracle has a cloud file system? Cool!

OCFS is based on ASM Cluster File System (ACFS) and ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM). It looks like the marketing material also refers to OCFS as CloudFS. The idea is to use ASM functionality with 3rd party file systems to provide simplify management and improve utilization of storage systems. More importantly, and here is where the Cloud comes in, it provides elastic provisioning. You have a pool of disks and you can shrink and grow that dynamically.

I don’t really see anything new here. This is more of a grouping of functionality and marketing material as far as I can tell. Since, it’s pretty cool. Especially for a company that was not getting the whole cloud thing a few years ago. Also as far as I can tell, you can’t download anything yet. I think this was an announcement of something coming in the future.

As you would expect from Oracle, in addition to the elasticity provided by the volume manager, the Cloud File System provides security, replication, encryption and snapshots. Everything you need from a modern file system.

Some choice quotes from the material:

Oracle Cloud File System is designed to help organizations deploy their applications, databases, and storage in private clouds. It delivers a cloud infrastructure that provides network access, rapid elasticity and provisioning for pooled storage resources that are the key requirements for cloud computing. With Oracle Cloud File System customers can use Oracle Database features to manage application data stored outside of an Oracle Database.

Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System may be used to store business data (i.e. FILES, external tables, images, etc), application software tier (i.e. Oracle database binaries, Oracle and 3rd party applications, and personal files (home directories, personal files).

The Oracle Cloud File System (CloudFS) provides unprecedented simplicity in storage management, automation in provisioning and storage consolidation for general purpose files. CloudFS is a storage cloud infrastructure with resource pooling, network accessibility, rapid elasticity and rapid provisioning that are key requirements for cloud computing environments.
